The ‘Unicorn’ by Steve Hann at ETC surfboards is perfectly suited to a heavier surfer, someone transitioning onto shorter boards or someone that requires more float. The outline, generous proportions and overall design of the Unicorn pack a lot of volume into a relatively short length. This results in less ‘swing weight’, which makes the board more snappy in turns. Other design features, such as the sidecuts, unique bottom shape and foil distribution make this the ideal high-performance speed machine.
We have been following Steve Hann with interest for some time at Big Guy Boards. His strong, light weight and eco-friendly construction methods are a much needed alternative to a predominantly unsustainable industry. In addition to environmentally conscious manufacture, these boards are so durable that they last considerably longer then traditional construction - meaning less boards will end up on landfill. During testing the boards withstood a weight of nearly 500kg.
As a bigger person himself, Steve has years of experience shaping and developing performance surfboards to suit a heavier surfer. An expert in designing and creating boards that hide volume in the right places, ETC is a welcome alternative to the big brands - that often simply scale up their boards to achieve more float. The Unicorn model has been refined over a number of years and is the ultimate high-volume performance surfboard for every day conditions.
From the shaper:
‘The UNICORN is the result of many years of work and design. This board is a great all rounder and perfect as a 1 board quiver. The wide point is right at the chest area making it a super smooth paddler and gives plenty of planing volume which makes this a great little groveller. However turn up the surf size (I've ridden a 5'10" in double overhead) and it handles it so well. The bottom chine gives this board speed on tap whilst the incut drastically narrows the board at your front foot allowing for tight and seamless turning ability. Although the UNICORN looks far from your traditional surfboard it is pretty much the most fun and capable board I have ever ridden.’
